Thanks.  That helped keep me on the hunt.  I finally got it to work today.  As usual, a simple error on my part.  The IP address to use when going through the eithernet connection even with a wireless router, is default 192.168.1.55:9999 as opposed to 192.168.0.1::9999 when going through the native wireless module.  When this finally dawned on me to try, it was clear sailing and the Andriod app works perfectly.
