Unable to start OnStep

Hello Everyone,

I'm using all the parts from the "kit C" for OnStep.
I was able to successfully upload OnStep, no errors are returned on compiling. Was also able to Access the webpage at 192.168.0.1, but it says the serial interface is down. OnStep Baud Rate, ESP8266 or Teensy3.2 Baud Rate, ESP8266 SERIAL SWAP, Wiring of com ports or power supply pins.

The power light on the STM32 comes on and stays red. The WeMos stays blue. I checked the run/flash switch and wiring/OK. I was able to run BLINK on the STM32 and that worked fine. I was able to set the WeMos LED
to blink, and that also works. I thought perhaps it wasn't talking to the DS3231, so I bought and swapped that out, same result. I checked all the solder points with a magnifier and all is good. I used all of the downloads from links directly from the directions for the kit. I'm not seeing any compile errors when I upload. below is the code. Thanks in advance for any help!

It is better to uninstall then clean up everything and install all properly.

I was able to clear the eprom and there were two addresses returned, I had run the blink sketch earlier. Does this rule out hardware?
I completely removed the IDE with the uninstaller. I deleted the x86, and documents folders entirely. I deleted all the files I originally downloaded and got new copies.
So I’d think that would be starting from scratch? It’s still pulling files out of a temporary directory and showing duplicates. Is there a method to make sure everything from the old installation is gone? It seems as old files are doing me in somehow. Perhaps windows isn’t the platform for this, should I try my MAC?
This is my first experience with any of this, so I thank you for your help.

I'm not "the guy" for STM32 stuff but two observations:

1. You seem to be using the master branch of OnStep.  You should be using release 2.22 (the Wiki states this.)
2. You should attempt to determine if OnStep is up and running via its USB interface.  Using Arduino's Serial Monitor send a few commands to see if OnStep is there.

The IDE places per-compiled object code under the temp folder to speed compilation.  This is normal, ignore it.  Some library functionality is baked into Arduino where perhaps it wasn't before and/or duplicated on purpose by platform specific libraries to override, again this is normal and happens.  I've yet to see that cause a problem (not that it can't), I will ignore and assume it works.

The other warnings I looked at are all irrelevant and/or done on purpose for reasons the compiler doesn't understand.

It's not like you're the first person to compile 2.22 and upload to an STM32 on Windows.

Yes. That means the hardware is sound, and working.

As Howard said, try to make OnStep work with the USB first.
After you flash, open Serial Monitor in the IDE, and then enter the commands
on this page under Extended LX200

See if the green LED (or the tracking LED if you connected one) blinks.

You can also try the ASCOM driver with Stellarium and see if the pointer moves across the sky.

Only after the above works, worry about WiFi.

Even without Autostart Tracking, the green light should be on (solid when not tracking, and blinking when tracking).
Usually, this means that the STM32 cannot communicate with the EEPROM on the DS3231 module).

However, you have verified that the EEPROM is accessible, because a) you have two I2C devices, and b) you were able to wipe the EEPROM.

So, it is something else, and I have no idea what it is.

Try version 2.22, and see if it makes a difference.

If you have autostart tracking is on in the config, and the status LED implemented properly, and the status LED is enabled in the config, and it's not flashing... OnStep isn't running.  What to do about that comes down to STM32 specifics and with those I'm not "the guy".

What it all comes down to is if you can send a sketch up to the the STM32 you have a live USB virtual serial connection.  Your ability to access that later, or not, has nothing at all to do with OnStep.

Could this be because of some software or driver mismatch? I updated all the boards and libraries to their latest versions, and using the latest version of Arduino IDE. I’ve also updated windows 10 and all drivers.
I’m not seeing any security warnings within windows. (Well I did for your ASCOM driver, but allowed that to run).
I suppose I could get out my old Win XP laptop and give that a go.
the USB cable is just a regular cable? I can try swapping that out.
its a bit troublesome that even though I removed and reinstalled the IDE it was still referencing temporary files, I checked to make sure the new files were organized properly...It may not have anything to do with it as Howard said. 
Many other ideas would be great, I’ll try the other version you suggested sometime tomorrow.

Not a driver issue.
You are already successful in flashing the STM32, so the USB driver for it is working fine.

Do a search on all the C: drive for OnStep.ino, to make sure that you only have one directory with OnStep in it. I see that you have this directory: C:\Users\joe\Documents\Arduino\OnStep\ and that should be the only one.

A few people were able to run things that are not running by doing that.
That is because there are tens of people who are running Windows 10 with the IDE on this mailing list with no issues.
But, using another machine, it could be just a bad IDE install (stuff installed in multiple directories, ...etc.), and installing things from scratch on another machine fixes whatever was wrong with the other machine.

You can flash the STM32. The USB cable is not the issue.
Do not change several things at the same time. You will only confuse yourself further.

As Howard said, the path C:\\Users\\joe\\AppData\\Local\\Temp\\arduino_build_xxxxx is a temporary build directory. It is normal to have stuff there.

Have you tried Version 2.22 as well as 'master' (version 3.x)?
Let us know if they are.

I know this will seem silly to ask but from my experience, your problem seems like the run mode jumpers on the STM32 aren't reconfigured correctly after uploading the bin file. The jumper on  For awhile after I built my STM32 OnStep board, I had trouble with the switch hanging up on the hole in the side of the case. Everything seems normal in the download, but OnStep didn't actually seem to run.

Another possibility in the Wiki on configuring the STM32, we are reminded to turn off power, then unplug the USB cable, the move the Flash-Run switch. The says, "If you have trouble with Windows connecting to the STM32 through the CP2102 USB port, either to communicate with OnStep or to upload firmware, it is likely you missed the step of unplugging the USB cable when the STM32 mode was being switched. This is because the USB-side of the CP2102 remains powered by the USB cable even when the PCB power is off and the Windows driver does not recognize the mode switch correctly (Linux gets it right but Windows does not)."

I don't remember if my issue was exactly like yours, but I do remember being confused as to why it worked a few minutes before and suddenly not now.
Of so, it would be such an easy fix. I also find this kind of thing happens more frequently now as I get a little older...

There is no such thing as a silly thing to ask...
After I read your email I tried it again, bypassing the switch with a jumper. I was extra careful to do as you described, all with the same result.
Khalid sent a binary if his build, and I flashed it with different software he suggested. Same result there also.
All the other software I’ve flashed is fine, the monitor returns 2 addresses and the eprom wipe works also. The blink program works as intended.
I think I must have scrambled my IDE build by placing files in the wrong spot. Why I can’t unscramble it with the uninstaller is anyone’s guess. Windows has never been great with this stuff...
I’d be interested in any other ideas, no matter how silly!

Another possibility in the Wiki on configuring the STM32, we are reminded to turn off power, then unplug the USB cable, the move the Flash-Run switch. The says, "If you have trouble with Windows connecting to the STM32 through the CP2102 USB port, either to communicate with OnStep or to upload firmware, it is likely you missed the step of unplugging the USB cable when the STM32 mode was being switched. This is because the USB-side of the CP2102 remains powered by the USB cable even when the PCB power is off and the Windows driver does not recognize the mode switch correctly (Linux gets it right but Windows does not)."

I don't remember if my issue was exactly like yours, but I do remember being confused as to why it worked a few minutes before and suddenly not now.
Of so, it would be such an easy fix. I also find this kind of thing happens more frequently now as I get a little older...

I think the switch is fine, simply because you don't face a problem flashing.
It is running that is the issue, and the STM32 switches itself at end of flash to run mode even of the switch is set for flashing.

Khalid sent a binary if his build, and I flashed it with different software he suggested. Same result there also.
The utility in question is the Windows STM32 flasher from ST Electronics web site.

The fact that the symptom is the same with my binary points to something specific at your end.
No idea what it can be, since the EEPROM sketches work fine.

All the other software I’ve flashed is fine, the monitor returns 2 addresses and the eprom wipe works also. The blink program works as intended.
The blink sketch only verifies the STM32 itself.
The two other sketches verify that the PCB is wired correctly and that the I2C devices respond fine, ruling out the EEPROM as a source of the troubles.

I think I must have scrambled my IDE build by placing files in the wrong spot. Why I can’t unscramble it with the uninstaller is anyone’s guess. Windows has never been great with this stuff...
I’d be interested in any other ideas, no matter how silly!
Since you tried a build from me, it is not the IDE that is the issue.
The same IDE works with the I2C scanner and the EEPROM wipe.

What else can it be? I am out of ideas.

The Windoze uninstaller only removes files that were installed by the installer. If you put other files in locations that the IDE is somehow finding, an uninstall won't get rid of them. If you don't remember or know the locations you put files manually, its going to make your search and destroy mission very difficult indeed. And like the black cat in the coal cellar... it may not be there!

This 'unable to start' has happened before but I cannot remember who or what the solution was. Maybe that person will recognize this and chime in.

A couple of these were bad DS3231 modules with bad EEPROM chips (or connections to them).
One person (or was it two?) had to replace the STM32. The symptoms were failed I2C scanning.

The current combination of failing to start + successful I2C scanning is a new one.
